K08 Gamera vs. Guiron

(1969, Children-Rubber Monster, color)

A world without work, or wars, or traffic accidents…

Rating: *1/2

Gamera follows two monster children into space when they’re abducted by a flying saucer. (A third stays behind to try, unsuccessfully, to warn their parents.) Foes include a pair of brain-eating alien Japanese women with Midwestern soccer mom accents, and a knife-headed monster with shuriken boogers. Perhaps the goofiest Rubber Monster movie ever made. Also shown in Episode 312.

Grainy footage of the prototypical Mads. The commentary seems to go better in this episode, though the jokes crash into each other occasionally. Several punchlines seem to go missing as more than one of the Satellite crew thinks of a joke at once. The goofiness of the film gets to them a little when they can’t stop giggling at the head-shaving scene. The Mads appear early on in the host segments, gloating and taunting as usual. Crow reveals this episode’s host segment theme by dreaming of an alternate universe where he is the evil mad scientist experimenting on Doctors Erhardt and Forrester as they orbit the earth in the Satellite of Loathe. Thereafter, Joel discusses the difference between dreams, fantasies, and reruns of the Beverly Hillbillies. “I dream about you, Joel,” Gypsy replies when questioned. “Just like you programmed me to.”
